Stewart Select Angus Cow Families

Stewart Select Angus started with several cow families from the Royce herd that was purchased in its entirety in the mid 1950’s. We have added a handful of other cow families since that time to complement those genetics and expand our horizons. These cow families of the past and present include Ann, Blackcap, Elba, Elluna, Erica, Eventress, Jet, Juantalite, Karama, Lucy, Mignonne, Miss Countess, Miss Traveler, Perola Pride, Queen, Queen Mother, and Ruth. Below I focus on our 6 biggest cow families currently and discuss the origin and also provide some pictures.

Ann Cow Family

The Ann cow family was brought to Stewart Select with the purchase of some cows from Gauger Bros in South Dakota. This cow family currently makes up roughly 10% of our herd currently. Our Ann cows always seem to have some good longevity. S S Insight T20, an In Focus son out of a Retail Product cow that Select Sires purchased in 2008, was a descendant of our Ann Cow Family. Our first bull sold to Select Sires, S S Ambush Advantage 14F, was also out of our Ann cow family.

Eventress Cow Family

The Eventress cow family was brought to Stewart Select with the purchase of the Royce herd in the mid-50s. This cow family currently makes up about a quarter of our herd currently. Our Eventress family has been the backbone of our herd since the beginning. Many great cows have come out of this cow family and they continue to produce for us. Our calving ease specialist, S S Rocket C142, is from the Eventress Cow Family and was purchased by Select Sires out of our first sale.

Jet Cow Family

The Jet cow family was brought to Stewart Select in the early 1990’s through the purchase of Thomas Jet 0108 who was a A A R New Trend cow out of a QLC Target cow. This cow was flushed once and also lived to the ripe old age of 13. Through this single heifer, we have grown our Jet cow family to approximately 16% of our herd. Some of the descandants of this cow family include S S Krugerrand 111H who sired the top performance indexing get at the IBEP Bull Test in Winter 2000 and Winter 2001 Tests. Our most recent major sale of the Jet cow family was with S S Niagara Z29 who was purchased by Select Sires in 2013. For the past several years, Niagara has been on the Top 25 sires list for registrations for the Angus breed. Several sons of Niagara have been purchased by AI Studs including our very own S S Brickyard from our Lucy cow family.

Lucy Cow Family

Much like the Jet family, the Lucy cow family was brought to Stewart Select in the early 1990’s through the purchase of a single heifer, Thomas Lucy 1351 who was a Rito 2100 G D A R cow out of a A A R New Trend Cow. Through this single heifer, we have grown our Lucy cow family to approximately 18% of our herd. Some of the descandants of this cow family include S S Decatur 55H who was the top sale indexing bull at the Winter 1998 IBEP Bull Test. Select Sires purchased this bull who was a son of S A F Fame and he created some great daughters. S S Warrior Z20 was purchased by Accelerated Genetics in 2013 at the Midland Bull Test. He performed very well at the MBT and got a lot of attention on sale day. He makes some well balanced cattle that have a little extra length. S S Brickyard was purchased by Genex Cooperative in 2018 and sees heavy use in heifer breeding projects as well as beef on dairy scenarios. His calving ease and carcass qualities make him a great candidate for both of these markets.

Ruth Cow Family

The Ruth cow family was brought to Stewart Select when our long time herdsman, Dave Smith, purchased Windwalker Ruth 1U from Windwalker Cattle Co. in Idaho. When Dave retired, Stewart Select Angus purchased his cows that he had kept with our herd.. These cows have performed well for Dave and we expect them to perform well for us in the future. These cattle have plenty of growth and good width of base. Approximately 6% of our cow herd is made up of the Ruth Cow family.

Mignonne Cow Family

The Mignonne cow family at Stewart Select Angus traces back to one cow from the Thomas Angus Ranch in Oregon. While the percentage of our total cow herd of Mignonne cows is small, this cow family pulls its own weight when talking about the performance of our calf crop. Of the current five daughters eligible for Pathfinder status in our herd that are Mignonne’s, 2 of them are Pathfinder. At our 2022 Crossroads Collaboration Sale, our top bred heifer was from this cow family.
